The Start to the Scouting Year!

A new school year is about to begin and right behind it comes the start of the Scouting year.

I hope everyone had a terrific summer and I look forward to seeing you all at our first meeting of the new year.  School starts tomorrow, September 1, but the Scouting year officially kicks off next Wednesday, September 8 at 7:00 pm.

We’ve got a full first month on the calendar, and I’ll highlite a couple of items here.  For the full calendar, please check the “Calendar” page on the website.

Our first outing of the year is a trip west to the highest peak in Massachusetts – Mt. Greylock.  All camping within Mt. Greylock State Reservation is backcountry camping, so we’ll be backpacking in to our campground.  We’ll set up camp and head for the top of Greylock.  This trip will take place the weekend of September 25/26.  We’ve got just a couple of meetings to prepare for the trip, so grab your packs and boots out of storage, find your flashlight and compass and get ready for a great weekend in the Berkshires.

We’re also kicking the year off with a service project on town conservation land.  The Scouts from Troop 437 established a trail from Preservation Way connecting with the Kennedy Pond trail system.  Over the past couple of years, the trail entrance has become overgrown and the trail blocked with deadfall.  We’ll spend Saturday morning, September 18, cleaning up the entrance, clearing the trail and painting trail markers along the trail.  Come prepared with work gloves, yard tools and a smile and we’ll reclaim a hiking trail.

Finally, our Fall Court of Honor is scheduled for the last Wednesday of the month – September 29.  We had a lot of advancement over the summer and look forward to recognizing the achievements of our Scouts.

Between an early week at summer camp, 2 weeks of Jamboree and family vacations, we haven’t been able to get the leadership together to put together the full 2010-2011 calendar.  We’ll need to move quickly to get the calendar together.  I’ll be working with your SPL to get a leadership meeting scheduled in the next week or so.  We will be planning the year around a big adventure in the Spring – focusing the year’s activities on learning the skills and planning for the trip.  We need ideas and input from the Scouts as to what adventure we should look for.  Canoeing?  Biking?  Backpacking?  The choice is up to you!  See your Patrol Leader or the SPL to offer your suggestions for this year’s activities.

Looking forward to another great Scouting year – bring your “A” game and let’s make it the best year yet with Troop 591!
