Kayak Training Reminder & Directions

We’re off for some kayak training at Charles River Canoe and Kayak’s Newton Boathouse this Sunday!

Newton BoathouseThe weather looks great and it should be a good day for a little swim in the Charles River :)

We’ll be paddling in 2 groups, each with an instructor, for 1½ hours on the river. The class starts at 1:00, so you should be at the boathouse by 12:30 to meet up with the Troop and give us time to check in and get our boats, paddles and PFDs.

You are welcome to stay and paddle some more after the class if you want.  Boat rentals are $15/hour for any time beyond the class.  You are responsible for any additional fees after the class.

Forms and Waivers

An activity waiver is required for every participant.  Please download and fill out the form(s) before you arrive.  I will collect all forms when we meet on Sunday to check us in.

  • A signed CRCK Activity Release is required for each participant. A parent’s signature in addition to the Scout’s signature is required for Scouts under 18 years old.
  • If your Scout will not be accompanied by a parent, you should also fill out the CRCK Parental Permission Form. (Don’t forget to initial at the end of the first sentence on page 1)

Checklist for Sunday

To help you get ready for Sunday, here’s a handy checklist of things to wear or bring …

  • Dress to get wet! Make sure you’re wearing a bathing suit, river shorts, rash guard or synthetic t-shirt
  • Water shoes, strap sandals or old sneakers are required in the boat
  • Bring a towel and change of clothes if you want to dry off after the class
  • You should be wearing a strap for glasses (prescription or sun)
  • Sunscreen!!!
  • If you have a small dry bag for keys, wallets or other valuables bring it along. We’ll have a Troop bag if you don’t have one.  There are no lockers, so leave what you won’t carry in the boat locked in your car.
  • Bring a (full) water bottle with you in case you get thirsty!!

The CRCK Boathouse is located at 2401 Commonwealth Avenue (Route 30) in Newton.

Parking is located across the river from the boathouse on the western bank of the river.

  • Take Route 2 to Route 128 South
  • Take Exit 24 (Route 30), which is just after the entrance to the Mass Pike
  • Go straight through the lights on to River Road
  • Take the first right after the entrance to the Mass Pike on to Norumbega Road
  • Take a right at the end to the parking area by the bridge

There’s a set of stairs at the south end of the parking area that will take you up to Comm Ave. Cross the river and the boathouse is just across the bridge on the left.
