Last Minute Trip Updates

Hey Paddlers!

Looks like a great weekend for paddling on Lake Umbagog!  Here’s a few reminders and last minute details to note before we leave on Friday …

Weather

The forecast for the weekend is partly cloudy all weekend long! (If it doesn’t rain will it really be a Boy Scout Trip?)  Temperatures will be on the cool side – high temps in the low 70’s and low temps in the 40’s.

Make sure you’ve got some warmer layers for the evenings and a fleece top for chilly morning paddling.

Packing

Pack small!!

The front hatch on the kayaks are only 10 inches across and you’ve got to fit a lot of your gear up front.  It’s better to have a few small dry bags rather than 1 big dry bag.  If you don’t have enough dry bags, you can use heavy duty trash bags or ZipLoc bags.  Things like pots, tent poles, tarps and other items that can survive getting wet can go right in the hatch “as is”.

You can pack the tent body, fly and poles separately to make 3 smaller items from 1 large item.  Food in ZipLoc bags can be packed into several small stuff sacks.

If you weren’t at the meeting last night, I created a Paddling Checklist you can use to help you remember what to bring.

Rides

We have the following rides set up for the Scouts …

  • Mr. Leonard: Sam, Jacob and Ryan
  • Mr. Dolan: Jason, Garrett and Alex
  • Parker, Mike and Brian will be with their fathers

Please make sure you get in touch with your driver to arrange pickup times and locations.

We plan on leaving Westford around 2:00 on Friday.  It’s a 4 hour drive to the base camp.  Dinner arrangements for Friday night are up to the discretion of each driver.  Please have a few extra dollars for a quick meal on the road if your driver decides to stop for dinner along the way.
