Bike Trip Details

Scouts and Parents,

We have finalized the plans for the Bike Trip on April 24-26, 2015!!

The-CrewWe will be staying at Camp Greenough in Yarmouthport on Cape Cod and riding on the Cape Cod Rail Trail from South Dennis to Wellfleet … and back!

Cost for this trip is $50/person – payable to Troop 591.

Checks and permission forms are due at the April 15th meeting.

We’re heading down on Friday afternoon and will have dinner in camp on Friday night (Scouts arriving late may need to fend for themselves on the way down).

We’ll be up and out on Saturday morning driving to the start of the CCRT in South Dennis. The trail is 22 miles from South Dennis to Wellfleet and we’re planning on riding the length of the trail … and back! Depending on time, we may take a short side trip to the Salt Pond Visitors Center at the Cape Cod National Seashore and follow the Nauset Bike Trail down to Coast Guard Beach.

We’ll have lunch on the ride, so please bring a day pack to carry your lunch – as well as some extra layers (it may be cool by the water), rain gear (just in case!) and any other stuff you might need or want on the ride.

We’re back to Camp Greenough on Saturday night for dinner and a well-deserved good night’s rest!

Sunday after breakfast we’ll head on out and take a short bike ride along the Cape Cod Canal before heading for home.

We’ll finish the weekend with pizza for lunch before heading back to Westford.

Check Your Bike!

Chances are that you haven’t ridden your bike all winter and you may need some repairs or a tune-up before embarking on this trip.

Please check your bike and make sure the tires are inflated, your chain is lubricated, and your brakes and shifters are working properly.

Then take it for a test ride before you bring it on the trip!!!

Gear and Equipment

A properly fitting helmet is required for all riders on this trip!!!

In addition to your bike, helmet and personal gear (sleeping bag, pad, clothing and toiletries), please make sure you have the following equipment for this trip:

  • Daypack to carry lunch, layers and other essentials
  • Water bottle(s) for the ride
  • Extra layers (sweatshirt, long pants, gloves, hat, etc) as it may be cool by the water
  • Rain gear … just in case.
  • Sneakers or bike shoes (No sandals or slip on shoes for the ride)
  • Sunglasses and sun screen
  • Spending money for snacks/treats along the ride.

This is a “car camping” trip. Patrol leaders should plan on using the 2-burner stoves for meals and can bring coolers for refrigerated items. Patrol plans should have 2 dinners, 2 breakfasts, 1 trail lunch and Cracker Barrel.
