Packing for the Whitewater Trip

Scouts and Parents,

For those coming on the trip this weekend, here’s a quick summary of what you should bring with you and suggestions on packing.

We’re staying in our own tents Friday night at the outfitter’s base lodge. I suggest you pack a small bag (a daypack should do!) with your essentials for Friday night and clothes for Saturday morning.

You’ll need your own sleeping pad Friday night, but the outfitter provides sleeping pads and tents on Saturday night.

For your Friday night bag:

  • Flashlight, pocket knife, bug spray
  • Mess kit (small) for Saturday b’fast
  • Fleece or jacket for Friday night
  • River wear for Saturday morning

On Saturday morning, you’ll hand over your bag to the outfitter who will drive it in to have it waiting at camp. I suggest packing your gear in a medium duffle or gym bag.

For your Saturday night bag:

  • Flashlight, pocket knife, bug spray and other “essential” personal items
  • Sleeping bag
  • Fleece or jacket for Saturday night
  • Long pants
  • Rain Jacket
  • Towels (bring a couple of towels .. you’ll need a dry towel on Sunday as well)
  • Change of clothes for Sunday’s river trip
  • Change of clothes for the ride home
  • Dry socks and shoes for around camp

You will also want a “day bag” for the river. I suggest a small-medium dry bag if you have one.

  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Pack towel
  • Maybe a fleece if you tend to get chilly
  • Water bottle

For the River you’ll need

  • River shorts or bathing suit
  • Rash guard or swim shirt (a polypro/synthetic wicking shirt will do)
  • Closed-toe water shoes (or old sneakers)

Consider the weather!! It is forecast to be quite chilly and rainy on Sunday. You’ll be wet anyway, but having a long sleeve top in addition to the wet suit provided by the outfitter may help keep you warm in the chilly air.

As a reminder, cell phones and other electronics should be left in the cars at the base camp.
